Short answer: yes — if you can give it three days and accept that the sea might refuse you. Ulleungdo is not a day trip, it is not cheap, and it is the one place in Korea where we tell travellers outright that the weather, not the itinerary, is in charge.
Here is what it actually involves.
Where it is
Ulleungdo sits 217 km out in the East Sea, well beyond sight of the mainland. It is the eroded top of a volcano: cliffs straight out of the water, a single road clinging to the coast, and almost no flat ground. The island speed limit is 40 km/h, which tells you most of what you need to know about the corners.
Fewer foreign visitors come here in a year than pass through one Seoul palace in a morning.
Getting there: five routes, no flights
There is no airport. Every route is a ferry, and which port you leave from changes your whole trip.
| From | Arrives | Crossing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mukho (Donghae) | Dodong | 2 h 40 min | The fastest. What we use. |
| Pohang | Dodong | about 2 h 50 min | Good if you are coming from the south |
| Gangneung | Jeodong | about 3 h | Easy by KTX from Seoul |
| Hupo (Uljin) | Sadong | about 4 h 30 min | One sailing a day |
| Pohang Yeongilman | Sadong | about 6 h 20 min | The only one that carries cars |
A one-way adult fare on the Mukho boat is about ₩65,500 on a weekday and ₩71,900 at weekends, holidays and peak season. Other routes are broadly similar. Fares move, so take the figure from the booking screen.
From Seoul, the drive to Mukho takes about 3 hours 20 minutes (251 km). Add the crossing and you have lost most of a day at each end — which is exactly why two days does not work.
Dokdo: the reason many people come
From Ulleungdo a cruise runs out to Dokdo, the two rocky islets on Korea’s eastern maritime border. The round trip takes about four hours, of which roughly thirty minutes are spent standing on the islets. An adult ticket is around ₩63,500, plus a fuel surcharge that changes month to month.
Whether you get off the boat is decided on the day, by the swell. If it is too high the captain circles the islets instead of docking. No operator can promise you the landing — and if one does, be suspicious.
Circling is still worth doing. You are close, the sea is loud, and you understand immediately why two bare rocks matter this much to this country. But go expecting the circle and treat the landing as a bonus.
What is actually on Ulleungdo
Not beaches. The island is almost vertical.
- Nari Basin — 23 minutes and 18 km from Dodong. The floor of the old crater and the only flat land on the island, so the only place anyone could farm. Houses here were traditionally walled and roofed with reeds against the winter snow, which buries the basin.
- Bongnae Falls — seven minutes from Dodong. Groundwater coming straight out of the rock in three stages. The cold-air vent beside the path stays cold right through summer; islanders used it as a natural refrigerator.
- Dokdo Observatory — a cable car above Dodong, ₩7,500 for an adult. On a clear day you can see Dokdo, 87 km away. The Dokdo Museum beside the top station is free.
- Gwaneumdo — 11 minutes and 9 km from Dodong, over a footbridge, for the view back along the north shore.
- The coast road — blasted into the cliff, and only closed its final gap a few years ago. Elephant Rock and the Samseonam stacks are on this stretch.
And the eating is its own reason to come: honghap-bap (mussel rice), ttagaebi kalguksu (barnacle noodle soup), and the squid the island is known for.
How long you need
Three days, two nights, minimum. Day one is the drive and the crossing, with an afternoon on the island. Day two is the Dokdo cruise in the morning and the volcanic interior after lunch. Day three is the north coast and the boat home.
Two days is not a trip, it is a commute. Four gives you room to move the Dokdo cruise if the first morning is rough — and if Dokdo matters to you, that spare day is the single best thing you can buy.
When the sea says no
Sailings to Ulleungdo are cancelled in bad weather, and in winter they are cancelled often. People get stuck on the island for a day or more. It is not unusual and it is not anyone’s fault.
Do not book a flight home for the day after you are due back. We say the same thing about Baengnyeongdo and we mean it just as seriously here.
So — is it worth it?
If you want an easy island with a beach, no. Jeju does that better and costs you nothing in nerves.
If you want somewhere that still feels like the edge of the country — where the road hangs off a cliff, the only flat ground is a crater floor, and you can stand on two rocks that an entire nation argues about — then yes, clearly. Just give it three days and keep the forecast open.
