The other half of Korea, north and inland of Seoul, on the gentlest driving route we run.
The trip opens at the border. Imjingak stands where the railway to the north was cut in 1953, and from there you join the authorised bus into the Demilitarized Zone — the one part of these six days shared with other travellers, because the DMZ cannot be entered any other way. The afternoon is spent in Heyri, a village built by artists a few kilometres from that same border.
After that the road turns inland and slows down. Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong, a country market and a rail bike in Yangpyeong, then the lake country: a cable car above Chungjuho Lake, a cruise between the rock peaks, a glass-floored skywalk 30 metres over the Namhangang River, and a limestone cave 1,700 metres deep at Danyang. The last stop before Seoul is Museum SAN, set into the hills at Wonju.
This is a private tour. There is no group apart from the DMZ bus, which is compulsory for everyone: just you, the people you came with, and your English-speaking driver-guide for all six days. You sleep in five different towns.
The longest drive of the whole week is one hour and thirty minutes. Four of the six days have less than ninety minutes on the road in total.

– Move to Paju by a private car (55m)
– Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri park, the peace-themed park that represents the hope of future reunification. The Freedom Bridge and the rusted steam locomotive stand where the railway to the north was cut.
– Join the DMZ Bus tour from Imjingak Park and explore the Demilitarized Zone. This is the one part of the trip shared with other travellers, as the DMZ can only be entered on an authorised tour.
– Heyri Art village. Heyri is a village built by artists, writers and musicians, where the galleries, workshops and cafes are all low buildings set among trees.

– Majang lake suspension bridge. The bridge stretches for 220 meters over Majang lake, and the walk across gives a view over the wooded hills of northern Gyeonggi.
– Move to Gapyeong by a private car (1h 20m)
– Nami Island. It is a half-moon shaped island also known as Naminara. The tree-lined avenues are the reason many visitors come, and the island is quiet once the day-trip crowds leave.

– The Garden of Morning Calm. The garden focuses on Korea’s natural beauty and showcases plants across themed grounds that change completely with the season.
– Petite France. A small French-styled village in the hills of Gapyeong, known to many Korean drama viewers.
– Move to Yangpyeong by a private car (1h 5m)
– Yongmun Millennium Market. You can see the current state of a Korean country market and meet the people who run the stalls.

– Ride a Yangpyeong rail bike. Pedal along a disused railway line and enjoy the river scenery of Yangpyeong at your own speed.
– Move to Jecheon by a private car (1h 20m)
– Uirimji reservoir, 1.8 kilometers in circumference and one of the oldest irrigation reservoirs in Korea. It is where local people walk in the morning and evening.
– Take a 2.3km cable car up to the Bibongsan Mountain Observatory. The observatory offers a 360-degree view over Chungjuho Lake, and there is a cafe at the top.

– Take a cruise on Chungjuho Lake to see the water at close range. You pass well-known rock formations such as Oksunbong peak and Gudambong peak. The boat covers about 25 kilometers in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
– Move to Danyang by a private car (45m)
– Mancheonha Skywalk. Three observatory decks reach out like stretched wings at the end of a 30m-high spiral walkway, with glass-bottomed sections over the river below.
– After dinner, visit Suyanggae light tunnel, a garden decorated with LED light and illumination that is best seen after dark.

– Gosu cave. Gosu cave is a limestone cave roughly 1,700 meters long, with stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes and cave pearls.
– Danyang Gugyeong market, a country market where you can see what is in season and try the local garlic dishes.
– Dodamsambong Peaks & Seongmun. Dodamsambong is three stone peaks rising out of the Namhangang River. Nearby is Seongmun, a huge rock arch that frames the view.
– Move toward Seoul, stopping at Museum SAN in Wonju (1h 15m). Museum SAN is a place where art and architecture are set into the natural surroundings.
